The Power of Being Seen

The first time we met Franco, he barely spoke.

During our medical campaigns in Peru, families often wait for hours to be seen. It can be a long, exhausting day, especially for kids. That is why we created a space just for them. A place to play, color, hear Bible stories, and simply be kids.

But what matters most are the moments in between. Sitting with them, listening, and reminding them they are seen and valued.

That is where we met Franco.

He was about 12 years old, quiet and reserved. You could sense a heaviness in him before he said a word. His dad had left, and his mom was doing everything she could to provide. Franco was carrying more than most kids his age should have to carry.

One of our team members, who is a father himself, sat down with him and asked a simple question: “How can I pray for you?”

At first, Franco hesitated. Then he opened up and shared about the pain he had been carrying for a long time.

Our team member simply listened. He put his arm around Franco, spoke words of encouragement, and reminded him that he mattered and had purpose.

It was a small moment, but it stayed with him.

A year later, our team returned and saw Franco again.

This time, he was different. There was confidence in him and a quiet joy that had not been there before. He shared that he was doing well in school and even graduating his grade with honors.

It was the same boy, but something had shifted.

We know one moment does not change everything. But sometimes it becomes a turning point. A reminder that you are not alone, not forgotten, and that your life has value.

That is what we hope to create. Not just medical care for a day, but moments of connection that stay long after we leave.
