From a Dream to a Doctor

One of my favorite moments from this year’s trip to Peru didn’t happen in a dramatic way. It was quiet, almost easy to miss if you weren’t paying attention. But to me, it felt like a culmination of years of prayer, work, and waiting.

The first time I came to Peru was nine years ago. I still remember so many of the faces from that trip, but two stand out in a special way.

Dariana was a student at the time. While many students her age might have been shy or unsure, she stepped right in to help wherever she could. She spent time with us in triage taking vitals, helping dress wounds, observing closely. There was something steady about her. When she told me she wanted to become a doctor, I believed her.

Francesco, on the other hand, had a very different personality. He was rambunctious, full of energy, and incredibly driven. He talked about becoming a doctor too, but not just for the title. He wanted to serve his own community. He wanted to serve alongside Twin Missions one day.

At the time, those were just dreams.

And like many dreams, there was a long road ahead - years of studying, sacrifice, perseverance, and growth that we wouldn’t get to see day by day.

But this year, we saw the result.

While we were in Peru, Francesco took his final exam for medical school. That same afternoon, after officially earning his MD, he came straight to the medical campaign and joined us in serving patients.

This year, Dariana also finished her degree and took her place beside us in the medical campaigns.

I found myself pausing and just watching for a moment, trying to take it in.

Nine years earlier, these were just kids hoping for what they could become. And now, here they were, standing beside us, not as students observing, but as doctors serving.

It felt like watching a full circle moment unfold right in front of us.

Moments like this remind me that the impact of these trips goes far beyond what we can measure in a single week.

Yes, we treat patients. Yes, we provide care. But something deeper is happening over time. Relationships are built. Young people are inspired. Seeds are planted.

And eventually, those seeds grow into something lasting—a community that is equipped and passionate about serving one another from within.

That’s the kind of impact we pray for.

And getting to witness even a small glimpse of it this year was something I won’t forget.
